In the Taishō period, many Japanese started visiting China, particularly as the industries of tourism and travel developed. In addition to school field trips and group voyages, a number of famous writers visited Shanghai or passed through it en route to Europe. The experiences of Tanizaki Jun’ichirō, Akutagawa Ryūnosuke, Inoue Kōbai, Muramatsu Shōfū, and Kaneko Mitsuharu are described in greater detail, as depicted in the travelogues they left.
