Zhang Jian was one of the most famous entrepreneurs of the first half of the twentieth century.  Less well known is that his primary model for the many institutions he built in his home town of Nantong was Japan, a country with which he had a love-hate relationship.  He employed many Japanese advisors and teachers to guide in his projects, but always remained wary of Japanese state designs on China.
